How to Spot Fake Followers Before You Pay a Creator

Buying followers is cheap, easy and still widespread. Spotting it takes about ten minutes per account, and it is the highest-return ten minutes in the whole process.

The Arithmetic That Gives It Away

Real accounts have a rough, boring consistency between followers, reach and engagement. Bought accounts do not.

SignalHealthySuspicious
Reel views vs followersA sizeable fraction, varying post to postTiny fraction, or eerily identical every time
Engagement rateFalls as the account growsHigh engagement on a large account
Follower growthUneven, with spikes around good postsStraight-line growth, or vertical jumps
Comment substanceQuestions, opinions, local referencesEmoji only, 'nice', 'great post', repeated
Story viewsA stable share of followersA fraction of a percent

The single most revealing number is story views. Followers can be bought; nobody buys story views. An account with 100,000 followers and a few hundred story views has an audience that is not real, or not paying attention. Either way you are not buying anything.

Read the Comments Properly

Open twenty comments and click through five of the accounts. Real audiences look messy — different profile photos, real posts, actual opinions. Bought engagement looks uniform: no profile photo, no posts, generic praise, often the same handful of accounts on every post.

Engagement pods are harder. Watch for the same twenty accounts commenting within minutes of every upload, always positively, never asking anything.

Ask for the Screenshots

Request Instagram Insights directly from the creator: reach for the last 30 days, audience top locations, age and gender split, and follower growth. Ask for a screen recording rather than stills if you want to be careful — stills are editable.

A creator who works professionally will send these without fuss. Hesitation is itself the answer.

You are not being rude by asking. You are being a client. Any creator who has done this before expects it.

Signals That Are Fine, Despite Looking Odd

Not everything unusual is fraud:

The cheapest protection: pay in two parts. Half on agreement, half after the post goes up and the first 48 hours of performance are visible. Almost every genuine creator accepts this. It also gives you a natural reason to look at the numbers together.
